Beyond the Diagnosis: The financial side of Cancer we don't always talk about

{Date}

A cancer diagnosis can change life in an instant, not only for the person diagnosed, but also for the family, friends and caregivers supporting them.

While health and treatment naturally become the priority, a diagnosis can also bring financial challenges that may not have been anticipated. Time away from work, travel for treatment, additional household support and unexpected expenses can all create financial pressure during an already difficult time.‍

Behind every cancer statistic is a person, a family and a story. And while we can't always prepare for what life may bring, we can take steps to better understand how to protect our financial well-being.

‍
Cancer in Canada: More common than you might think

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, approximately 42% of Canadians are expected to receive a cancer diagnosis during their lifetime.

In 2026, an estimated 254,100 new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed across Canada.

These numbers are significant, but behind them are individuals and families navigating diagnosis, treatment, recovery and everything that comes with it.

‍

The financial impact can extend beyond medical care

Canada's healthcare system covers many aspects of cancer treatment, but that doesn't mean a diagnosis comes without additional costs.

Prescription medications, travel and accommodation for treatment, childcare and household assistance can create unexpected expenses. Time away from work can affect income, while family members may also need to reduce their working hours to provide care.

According to research published by the Canadian Cancer Society, people with cancer and their caregivers face an estimated average of nearly $33,000 in lifetime costs, including out-of-pocket expenses, time costs and lost income.

For CPAs, financial planning is often second nature. But even the most carefully constructed financial plan can face unexpected challenges.

Whether you're a partner in a firm, self-employed or an employee, a serious illness can disrupt your income, require you to draw on savings or introduce expenses that weren't part of the plan.

The question isn't simply whether you can afford the medical expenses. It's whether your financial plan can withstand the disruption.

Understanding the role of Critical Illness Insurance

Insurance can't lessen the emotional or physical impact of cancer. But the right financial protection may help ease some of the financial pressures that accompany a serious illness.

Critical Illness Insurance is designed to provide a lump-sum tax-free benefit following the diagnosis of a covered critical illness, provided the conditions of the policy are met. Unlike insurance that reimburses specific expenses, a Critical Illness Insurance benefit can generally be used however you choose.

That might mean:

  • Helping cover everyday household expenses while you focus on recovery.
  • Managing costs associated with travel, treatment or additional care.
  • Providing financial flexibility if you or a family member needs time away from work.
  • Reducing the need to draw on savings or investments to cover unexpected expenses.

For someone who has spent years building financial security, that flexibility can be meaningful. It's important to understand that not every cancer diagnosis qualifies for a benefit. Coverage depends on the policy's definitions, exclusions and other requirements.

‍

How does Critical Illness Insurance differ from other coverage?

Critical Illness Insurance, Disability Insurance and Life Insurance serve different purposes.

• Critical Illness Insurance provides a benefit following a qualifying diagnosis, subject to the policy's terms.

• Disability Insurance is generally designed to replace a portion of your income if an illness or injury prevents you from working and you meet the policy's disability requirements.

• Life Insurance provides financial support to your beneficiaries in the event of your death while covered, subject to the terms of your policy.

These types of protection aren't interchangeable. Understanding what you already have and where gaps may exist is an important part of financial planning.

‍

Is your financial plan prepared for the unexpected?

No one wants to plan around receiving a serious diagnosis. But understanding your existing coverage can help you make informed decisions before you need to rely on it.

Consider a few questions:

  • If you were diagnosed with a serious illness tomorrow, how would your financial situation change?
  • Would you need to draw on savings or investments to maintain your lifestyle?
  • Could your household manage if you or your spouse needed extended time away from work?
  • Do you know whether your employer's benefits include Critical Illness Insurance?
  • Would additional financial flexibility allow you to focus more fully on your health and recovery?
    ‍

You don't need to have all the answers. Understanding your current protection is a good place to start.
